How to Prevent Clover in Your Lawn – CityCuts Lawn Care Tips
At CityCuts Lawn Care, we know how frustrating it is to see clover patches spreading across your lawn. Clover grows fast, stands out against your grass, and can take away from that clean, green, professional look you want. The good news? With the right lawn care routine, you can prevent clover and keep your yard looking stunning all year long.
1. Keep Your Lawn Well-Fertilized
Clover thrives in low-nitrogen soil. Grass, on the other hand, needs steady nutrients to stay thick and green.
- Fertilize 2–4 times a year
- Use a nitrogen-rich fertilizer
- Add compost to boost soil health
2. Mow at the Right Height
Cutting grass too short weakens it and allows clover to take over.
- Keep grass at 2.5–3 inches (6–8 cm)
- Never cut more than one-third at a time
3. Water Deeply, Not Daily
Weak, shallow roots create space for weeds like clover.
- Water 1–2 times per week
- Aim for 1 inch (2–3 cm) of water total
4. Overseed Thin Spots
Thick grass leaves no room for clover to spread. Overseeding in spring or fall strengthens your lawn and prevents weed invasion.
5. Improve Soil Quality
Poor soil makes grass struggle but clover thrive. Aerating, adding compost, and maintaining a pH between 6.0 and 7.0 helps your lawn stay strong.
6. Remove Clover Early
If you see clover forming, act fast:
- Pull small patches by hand
- Use spot treatments if needed
Natural Prevention Option
For a chemical-free method, apply corn gluten meal in early spring to prevent clover seeds from sprouting.
